I had the Pacific Shrimp Taco from Taco Bell yesterday. Six plump and tasteful shrimp adorned what could have been a Fresco taco (what with the presence of pico-style Fiesta Salsa) and also included our fast food nation’s beloved ranch dressing. The number six did stand out, as it was plastered all over the promo menu that six shrimp is what you would get. All questions removed and whiners beware. It was bigger-that-the-tortilla taste (literally; only three of my shrimp actually fit onto the taco. The other three served as happy little lagniappe. Fine with me.) And I thought it was a fine first approach at seafood by the bell. But the price sank the bouy; one taco for $2.79?

This is the first time I have gone on record to say this; but, I have worked at a McDonald’s before. I was never beaten by a manager, but they did ask the newbie (me) to clean the bathroom on my first day. Other than that, everyone was nice. I was offered some chicken nuggets out of a coworker’s pocket.

More on my flashback saga some other time, but for now, I just want to say I feel really bad for this McDonald’s employee.

Yes I took the nuggets.

This guy, Patrick Lin, is reintroducing doughnuts to China in a clever way: with diamonds, pearls, and ethnic ingenuity. Apparently, Dunkin’ Donuts has given it a couple tries, but the country just never caught on. Doughnuts are bready. Why would they pay a decadent price for bread? They will, if that bread is fashioned into a bracelet, complete with baubles and shiny lacquer. Based on a Japanese recipe (but don’t tell the Chinese!) these sweets can effectively answer one country’s craving for delicacy and indulgence. And so, with coffee-drinking on the up-and-up in China, these sweet jeweled desserts are sure to rise to the occasion. Rise and shine, Mr. Lin, it’s time to fake the doughnuts!

If I ever visit Austin, I’m definitely going to the UT campus Wendy’s.

Junior is a Wendy’s fast food cashier on a university campus that loves his job and it shows. He’s legendary with the students there, and he’s so fast, he ‘puts the fast in fast food’, as he says it.. You know how fast food cashiers get portrayed in movies as incompetent slackers? Well, you’ll forget about all of that once you see this documentary. Watching this is motivating on so many levels.

http://www.thewendysguy.com/movies.html

I love the bit where multiple students walk up and order their own ‘usual’ (which is different for each student) and he doesn’t miss a beat. Even though I’ve never met him, Junior is now my favorite cashier. (Favorite cashier I have met: Mr. Paul at the Taco Bell at Poplar and Estate in Memphis.)

I do a lot of eating on the run. Seems like my car has longtime been a lunchroom for me, but I’m not complaining. I feel safe as the law. I can lock all the doors…you get the idea. A cozy little me-sphere with all I need; food, drink, and a radio.

So, I have tried a lot of wraps and things like the old salad shaker from McDonald’s. Here’s my take on some of them:

Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supreme- Isn’t this the product that coined the phrase, “Good to go,” fast foodily speaking? To me, they are not quite. The shape makes them awkward to hold and eat and sometimes the tortilla doesn’t adhere to itself successfully. I once ate one of these while waiting in line for Grizzlies tickets, and even then it was not good to go.

KFC Twister Wrap- Okay, I like the name. It’s got a flavorful sauce on it (unlike Sonic’s grilled chicken wrap, but we’ll get to that). I’m even satisfied with the texture of the chicken and how well it holds up in a tortilla.

Sonic Grilled Chicken Wrap- Whoever decided that restaurants should to use lowfat anything on a wrap just because it is called a wrap made a poor decision. Although a little peppery, the lowfat ranch sauce on Sonic’s wrap lacks flavor, and it is runny. This makes for a potential splat when trying to drive and eat.

Chik-Fila Coolwrap- This thing ticked me off recently! Nothing at Chik-fila is cheap; you are going to pay a little extra to get some good fried then steamed chicken from CFA. Likewise, the Coolwraps are costly. They don’t come in fried, but instead offer a fresh choice for anyone wanting a lower-cal and cutsie deli style lunch. Beware; these are so not good to go. For starters, the packaging is too much to get into while you are going down the road. More importantly, the sauce that comes with these wraps is handed to you individually in a packet. I guess you could dip it. But to me, it’s just cold chicken. I won’t get it again.

McDonald’s Snackwrap- My favorite wrap. They come in different flavors, with the sauce already on them. You can get them “crispy” or grilled. They aren’t big at all, which means they cost less and you also get a healthier portioned (and easier to hold) meal to eat on the go. I like the BBQ Snackwrap. It’s sauce is spicy, and the cheddar cheese included is the perfect compliment for that. If I get one of these and a medium drink, I am good to go.

Although I rarely eat them, and I never eat them rare, sometimes I have a burger with intention. These are the days when I wake up and decide (or decide the night before) that “I will eat a burger today.”

Recently, one of those days involved the new Spicy Slaw Cheeseburger from Back Yard Burgers. I do like spice, and I am a big fan of adding slaw to sandwiches and burgers, but must say that I was not impressed with this burger.

First of all, the spice is not right. It’s just not spicy to me. It seemed like the slaw was drenched in buffalo sauce, like a buffalo slaw soup, and then plopped on my cheeseburger. Furthermore, the coldness of the slaw prevented the cheese on my burger from melting its best.
